PSL Weekend Review 24-26 February 2012

Fight for the title

Moroka Swallows        2 – 2    Mamelodi Sundowns

Bidvest Wits    1 – 1    Kaizer Chiefs

Kaiser Chiefs waste a change to come with-in 1 point of the log leaders as they draw against a youthful and exiting Wits side on Saturday evening.

Amakhosi started off the brightest going in front after just two minutes through Parker but the celebrations were short lived because Wits equalised 4 minutes through what looked like a handball by Sifiso Vilakazi.

Those two strikes ended up being the only goals in the tie and Chiefs squandered a chance to go one point behind Mamelodi Sundowns.

Orlando Pirates            1 – 0    Maritzburg Utd

Coach Leal gets to live another day as Benni McCarthy’s goal, late in the game, was enough to see Pirates win another home match over 10-men Maritzburg Utd.

It’s still a mystery why the Orlando Pirates Brazilian coach persists with playing Ndumiso Mabena ahead of players that are clearly better than him, and once again the coaches favourite players disappointed to no one’s real surprise.

This match was less than entertaining because both side never looked like scoring. Pirates got a break just after the hour mark when defender Peter Petersen picked up his second yellow and was sent to the locker for an early shower. Leal decided to ring in the changes by introducing Benni and taking off Bester, then with only 15 minutes left in the game McCarthy popped up with a spectacular overhead kick goal.

That goal was enough to see Pirates win the game, with the teams in the top 5 slipping up this weekend The Ghost moved into 3rd place on the PSL log only 3 points behind the leaders Sundowns.

SuperSport United       0 – 1     AmaZulu

Striker Ayanda Dlamini netted as AmaZulu shocked Premiership title chasers SuperSport United, beating them 1-0 in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening.
