Weekend European Football Review 3-6 February 2012

English Premier League

Fight for the League

Manchester City          3-0       Fulham

After Man City scored that penalty within the first 15 minutes we all knew the outcome, Fulham, a poor away side, were never going to come back. BOOORING!

Chelsea            3-3       Manchester United

Two penalties by Wayne Rooney and a free header 6 minutes from time by Chicharito capped off an astonishing comeback by Manchester United.

United were controlling the game but after an own goal by Jonathan Evans they found themselves 1 goal down 10 minutes before the half time break.

In the second half after only 5 minutes ManU were 3-0 goals down, goals that came from an incredible volley by Mata and an own goal by Rio. By then the match looked over but knowing the Chelsea defence-which didn't even have Terry and Cole- it wouldn't of been impossible for them to concede 3 goals in the remaining 40 minutes.

Long story short Manchester United fought their way back and they gained a point and the Blues lost two. GREAT GAME!

Fight for Champions League Spot(s)

Liverpool         0-0       Tottenham Hotspur

A boring match at Anfield which saw Luis Suarez come back to some more controversy and Gareth Bale have an off day.

Liverpool dominated most of the match but they couldn’t find a way through the Tottenham defence. The highlights of the match were Harry Redknapp being stranded in the south of England because of problems with his airline so he couldn’t make it to the match, a penalty claim by Carroll, a miss by Bale, the return of Suarez, and Suarez kicking Parker in a delicate area. Uhm that’s pretty much it…

Newcastle United       2-1       Aston Villa

It was the Senegal show as Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cisse scored a goal each to sink Aston Villa at the Sports Direct Arena.

A 71st volley by Cisse on his Newcastle debut had his coach singing praises about the 26 year old Senegalese striker.

The match was kind of boring for me but it’s great to see our African brothers impressing in England.

Arsenal            7-1       Blackburn Rovers

A bad Blackburn side got what they deserved as the Gunners took them to the cleaners with great performances by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (2 Goals) and Robin Van Persie (3 Goals).

Spanish La Liga

Fight for the League

Getafe             0-1       Real Madrid

Leaders Real Madrid did just enough to earn a sixth consecutive Primera Division win, with a 1-0 victory at city rivals Getafe with Sergio Ramos’18th minute goal.

Barcelona        2-1       Real Sociedad

Guardiola put a second string side against Sociedad and it almost back fired. Lionel Messi scored one goal and set up another as Barcelona stayed seven points behind Real Madrid with triumph over Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp - but Pep Guardiola's men were made to work hard for their triumph.

Fight for Champions League Spot(s)

Atlético Madrid          0-0       Valencia

Valencia maintained their seven-point advantage over Atletico Madrid in the race for a Champions League place after a boring goalless draw at the Vicente Calderon.

Levante           1-1       Racing Santander

Levante's hopes of catching city rivals Valencia in third place in the Primera Division suffered another setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by struggling Racing Santander.

Athletic Bilbao            3-3       Espanyol

A last minute goal secured a draw for Espanyol in a 6 goal thriller.

Bibao dominated the game early on and were one goal up within 26 minutes but the lead lasted for 7 minutes with the African Romaric’s beautiful goal from outside the box.

Three minutes into the second half Espanyol took the lead for the first time, Llorente put the home side back on terms with his 58th minute header then on the 65th minute went into the lead thanks to Marquez.

Deep into stoppage time Espanyol scored an equaliser to stay two-points ahead of Athletic in the race for a Champions League place. GREAT MATCH!
