Benni McCarthy scored a brace for Orlando Pirates against their bitter rivals Kaiser Chiefs to see them come away with a 3-2 victory in the biggest game in South African football.
This was a highly entertaining Soweto derby which was free flowing from the first whistle to the last.
VV made the strange decision of leaving Majoro on the bench and playing a 4-5-1 or as he would like to call it a 4-3-3 with Shabba playing in the midfield.
This tactic didn’t work; Lucky Baloyi and Willard Katsande were just not good enough to handle the midfield pairing or Oupa Manyisa and Andile Jali and George Lebese on the left of Chiefs’ front three was just out of his depth and was dominated by the Pirates right-back Nzunga.
Orlando Pirates scored 3 goals in the first 30 minutes and it starting looking like this is going to be a total annihilation of Amakhosi.
Segolela and Klate were having their way on the wings and Benni was bullying the two Kaiser Chiefs central defenders.
Against the run of play, in the 33rd minute, Tshabalala pulled one back for the Amakhosi but we were all thinking it was just a conciliation goal.
But in the second half Pirates took their foot of the gas and allowed Chiefs to get back into the game.
In the 70th minute Chiefs came within only one goal when substitute Majoro scored.
But it was too little too late for Kaiser Chiefs and the three Pirates goals in the first half were enough to see them take all 3 points.
